Every studio has a way of doing things: how a proposal is structured, what goes into a WordPress audit, which checks run before a site goes live. Agent Skills let you write that down once in a form Claude can follow, instead of pasting the same instructions into every chat.
What a skill is
A skill is a folder. At its centre is a SKILL.md file with a short YAML header, followed by plain-language instructions. The folder can also hold reference documents, templates or scripts that the instructions point to.

├── SKILL.md
├── pricing-guide.md
├── templates/
│ └── proposal-outline.md
└── scripts/
└── page_count.pyThe SKILL.md header
Two fields are required: name and description. The description matters most, because it is how Claude decides when the skill is relevant.
--- name: agency-proposal description: Write client proposals in our studio format. Use when asked to draft, price or restructure a proposal for a website, app or social media project. --- # Proposal format 1. Open with the client's goal in their own words. 2. Scope as a table: deliverable, detail, timeline. 3. Three tiers. Read pricing-guide.md before quoting. 4. Close with next steps and a single call to action.
Why skills stay fast: progressive disclosure
Claude doesn't read every skill in full all the time. It works in levels:
- Only the name and description of each installed skill are always in context.
- The full SKILL.md is read when a task matches the description.
- Linked files such as a pricing guide or template are opened only when needed.
That means you can install many skills without slowing down unrelated work.
Scripts make it repeatable
A skill can bundle code that Claude runs as a tool, for example a script that counts pages, checks image sizes or validates a sitemap. The result is deterministic: the same check, done the same way, every time.
Where skills work
Skills work across Claude's apps, Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK and the Claude Developer Platform. In December 2025 Anthropic also published Agent Skills as an open standard, so the same folder can travel between tools.
Studio tip: start with the task you explain most often. If you have written the same instructions three times, it should be a skill.
